Villa is a gripping and thought-provoking drama that explores the painful legacy of a country’s past, set against the backdrop of a former torture site. In this powerful and intimate play, three women gather to debate the future of the Villa Grimaldi, a real-life site of atrocities during Chile’s dictatorship.
Their mission: to decide how the site should be memorialised. As the women deliberate, they confront deep, conflicting emotions about memory, justice, and the responsibilities of remembering a painful history. Should the site be a museum, a memorial, or something else entirely? Their intense conversation becomes a metaphor for a nation’s struggle to reconcile with its violent past.
The English translation of Villa by William Gregory was originally commissioned by The Royal Court Theatre. Villa was first presented in English as a staged reading in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs directed by Guillermo Calderón as part of the 2011 Royal Court International Season, but SLT’s production marks the UK premiere of a dramatic performance of this play in the UK.
Three women, playing ages 25-35. All the characters are referred to in the play as “Alejandra”, they are of similar age and each has a personal link to the torture site, so at first glance they seem like they are interchangeable. However, as you’ll see, their characters are quite different. They are all good chunky roles, each with some interesting monologues.
Director: Stephen Grist
Performances: 17 - 21 Jun 2025
First Rehearsal: 30 Mar 2025
Characters:
Francisca: F, 25-35. World-weary, somewhat intellectual, manipulative; the shifts in her perspective across the play form a key part of the story arc.
Carla: F, 25-35. Passionate, quick to anger, maybe something of a dark joker.
Macarena: F, 25-35. Serious, conscious of the responsibility they have been given, solution-orientated.
We are happy for auditionees to audition for just one role, or be open to auditioning for all of them, but due to time constraints, we may only have the opportunity for you to read for one or two of the characters.
