In this delightful stage adaptation, Roald Dahl’s classic tale is faithfully told by James himself, along with the insect characters – Miss Spider, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybird and Earthworm. The play begins at the end of the story, when James and his friends are living in the giant peach stone in Central Park, New York.
A tour guide brings a party of tourists (the audience) to see this major attraction, and James and his friends tell the story of how they came to live in New York. The insects play the other roles, like James’s cruel Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, and the epic journey across the Atlantic is magically brought to life in David Wood's masterful adaptation.
All the parts will be played by adults. Apart from James himself, who will be male, all the actors can be any age or gender.
The five actors playing the insects will also play all the other characters. The most important thing for them will be to play these characters as larger than life, and really bring their characteristics to the fore, but then be able to switch to completely different characters. These additional characters will need to be played differently, physically and vocally, from the insects.
While this is by no means a musical, and I am not looking for singers, music is very important. All the characters have rhymes that we may chant, sing or speak rhythmically, so everyone will need some musicality and be prepared to sing. If you can play an instrument, do let me know, but it is certainly not essential! And no need to prepare anything for the audition at all on this front, but we may have a bit of a singalong.
