Casting – The Ballad of Maria Marten

05 Feb 25

Cal Beckett announces her cast for Beth Flintoff’s retelling of a 19th-century true crime story, this time with a focus on the victim and her life, and not her gruesome murder.

I'm delighted to announce my gorgeous cast of both new and familiar faces for this beautiful play. We're often blessed with a very high calibre of auditionees here at SLT, and my experience was no different - thanks to everyone who auditioned and who made my final choices so difficult to make.

When I picked up the script many months ago, I was immediately drawn to its wit, pace and humour, yet also its pathos. The warmth of the relationships between Maria and those who loved her is both funny and at times, gut-wrenchingly touching. Sometimes a script just hits you where it matters; although I know this is going to be a challenging story to tell, I'm so very happy to have found a cast and team who I know will help me do it justice. To paraphrase author Beth Flintoff, who wrote this play to counter the narrative of the notorious "Red Barn Murder" of 1827, this play is dedicated "to all the others who have been silenced".
