SLT Governance and Management

Governing bodies: The Board of Trustees and the Members' Club (Bar) Committee. Management bodies: Executive Committee and Youth and Adult Learning

The Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is the body elected by, and accountable to the membership. Made up of between 7 and 9 members, it may also appoint temporary (unelected) members to fill any skill gaps on the Board. It is responsible for ensuring the two charitable organisations (South London Theatre Centre (SLTC) and the SLT Building Preservation Trust (SLT-BPT) are functioning well and that they operate within the rules and regulations that apply. It will create and maintain a five year plan to ensure the two organisations are fit for the future and meet their charitable objectives. It appoints the Executive Committee that handle the day to day running of the theatre and the building.

The Executive Committee

The Executive Committee handles the day to day running of the theatre and the building. It is made up of representatives from teams and committees that run all SLTC and SLT-BPT functions. It is appointed by and accountable to the Board of Trustees. The purpose of the committee is to deal with any issues and conflicts that arise with activities, plan for the consolidated use of the building, and manage any risks that are identified that could impact any of the core functions.

Building Committee

The building team handle the day to day maintenance of the building, including the renting of space to the local community. The team will manage any building restoration or any structural improvement activity.

Theatre Committee

The Theatre Committee is responsible for the artistic output of SLT. They select the season of productions and work with show directors to make sure they are successful. They oversee auditions and rehearsals, and work with the other teams across SLT to support the productions. They are also responsible for organising workshops, training and other creative learning opportunities for members.

Youth Learning

The Youth Learning body is run by individuals employed to create learning and development opportunities on behalf of SLT and facilitate its popular youth classes. Positions are advertised externally and selections made according to employment legislation.

Members' Club Committee (BarCom)

BarCom comprises seven volunteer positions plus a general committee of volunteers and is responsible for running the theatre bar which is a private members’ club available to SLT members on a regular basis, and also to ticket holders on show nights. It also oversees member social events. To become a member of BarCom, you must have been a full member of SLT for six months, be nominated by another SLT member and elected by the membership at a Members Club General Meeting.

Trustee Board Meetings

Regular Board meetings

Trustee Board meetings take place no less than Quarterly.

The meetings will focus on:
The progress towards the planned activities for the year.
Comparison of spend against budget with focus on any areas where the budget looks like it will be exceeded.
Comparison of expected income against actual income for both organisations.
Strategic risks and issues.
The alignment of activities to the charitable objectives of both South London Theatre Centre and the SLT Building Preservation Trust.

Annual General Meetings

Full members of SLT are eligible to attend both the AGM and the Members’ Club AGM, which are usually held on the same evening. The date will be published around 4 weeks in advance of the meeting being held.

In advance of the meetings, we also publicise invitations to nominate members for official positions on the Board of Trustees and BarComm. Members of the Board of Trustees are appointed by an ordinary resolution at the Annual General Meeting. Members of the Members Club with at least 6 months’ membership is eligible to stand for election and will be appointed automatically if there is no competition for roles.

The content of the meetings varies, but the Annual Reports are produced in advance of them to enable members to ask questions about SLT’s activities and financial position. The Chair of both the Board of Trustees and the Members’ Club (more commonly known as BarComm) will review the past year, but also look ahead to significant future events and changes.
