From Page to Stage – directors’ workshop

A free workshop for new or would-be theatre directors (SLT members only).

Janine Wunsche is running a free workshop in early April to support new, assistant and would-be directors (SLT members only) wishing to develop their skills.

“When we read a play and get excited about it, we begin to imagine the production. We might be moved to laughter or tears, feel captivated by the language or the story, begin to see moments of drama in our minds' eyes, or all of these. We feel compelled to bring the play to life. Assuming we’ve found the right theatre space and some good actors, we’re now faced with the enormous task of making it all happen. But how do we hold the story and bring the scenes to life?

Every director is unique, which is great, so no two productions of a play will be the same. Our unique personal interest, imagination and interpretation of the story should be valued and maintained throughout the rehearsals.”

We’ll address these questions in the workshop:

How do we discover the appropriate style and environment for the drama?
How do we hold the ‘bigger picture’ of the play when working on a scene?
How can we best facilitate our creative actors in playing their roles?
How can we prepare to direct the scenes?
How do we most effectively communicate with actors and crew to get the show on?

We’ll also be inviting some experienced actors to explore selected scenes. Texts will be discussed on application.

This free (for SLT members only) workshop will be held on Saturday 12 April 10am - 5.30pm. There are just 8 places, so please email Janine directly to book your place.

Janine Wunsche is one of SLT’s most experienced directors. Since joining us in 2021, she has directed three classics; Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Sam Shephard’s True West and last year, A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller. But her directing CV goes way back before SLT, so she’s well-placed to coach anyone looking to develop their skills.
