Home, I’m Darling is a brilliant play by Laura Wade, which discusses nostalgia, gender roles, feminism, relationships and life choices with depth and humour. Set in modern times, it focuses on a couple who decide to live a 1950s' lifestyle with full authenticity.

Director: Kornelia Adelajda

Performances: 5 - 9 Sep 2023

First Rehearsal: 18 Jun 2023

Characters:

Judy: Early 40s. Our protagonist Judy loves the nostalgia of the 1950s and has arranged her life to resemble one in the era with minute detail. She and her husband turned their house into a mid-century lookalike and are living not only the style but also the values of the 50s. Judy is a complex character whose layers peel like an onion throughout the course of the play. She is the perfect housewife, the home goddess and the incarnation of many men’s dreams, but under this hides fragility and escapism.

Johnny: Early 40s. Judy’s husband, who willingly dives into the lifestyle change experiment. On the surface content with the reality he is in, but underneath starts to quietly question this contentment.

Fran: Mid-30s/early 40s. Judy’s friend. She and her husband also love the 50s style but she is only willing to adapt elements of it and not live it as a way of life. Fran likes hanging out with Judy and Johnny and is still in awe of how they adapted. She is curious about Judy’s motives for going that far.

Marcus: Mid 40s/early 50s. Fran’s older husband. He likes the idea of the 50s style and along with his wife is happy to adapt elements of it. He represents more traditional, men-centric attitudes and secretly yearns for the ideal housewife.

Sylvia: Late 60s. Judy’s mother. She doesn’t understand Judy’s choices. Sylvia used to be a feminist activist and feels quite strongly about empowering women. She loves her daughter but fails to comprehend her.

Alex : Late 20s/early 30s. Alex is Johnny’s manager. She is fascinated and bewildered by the couple’s way of life. She brings in a more critical attitude towards nostalgia. She is very career driven and focused on work.
