The Elephant Man is based on the life of John (Joseph) Merrick, a young man with severe physical deformities, who was a freak attraction in travelling sideshows in the latter part of the 19th century. After abandonment and robbery by his manager in Brussels and a narrow escape from the unruly mob at Liverpool Street station, Merrick was admitted to the London Hospital in Whitechapel under the care of a famous young doctor who educated him and introduced him to London society. Under Treves’ guidance, Merrick changed from an object of pity to the urbane and witty favourite of the aristocracy and literati. But his dream to become a man like others is a hope that will always be dashed.

This is an ensemble piece of nine actors (6M and 3F) who will play all parts.
Two male actors will play John Merrick and Frederick Treves.
